WHAT IS OUR OPINION ON LITURGICAL COLOR FOR FUNERAL MASSES: BLACK OF TLM OR WHITE OF NOVUS ORDO? March 13, 2018 by splendor1618 0 Comments0 Comments Sebastian Hello my friends!! A question on a couple of other matters. What are your thoughts on the subject of funeral Masses as they exist now (I believe white vestments are worn) as opposed to the old Requiem Masses with the wearing of black. As always, I welcome all of your knowledge on these matters. The Splendor of the Church [Hello my friends!!] HELLO TERRY. NICE TO HEAR FROM YOU AGAIN. [Also, what are your thoughts on the subject of funeral Masses as they exist now (I believe white vestments are worn) as opposed to the old Requiem Masses with the wearing of black. As always, I welcome all of your knowledge on these matters.] WELL, THE USE OF WHITE FOR FUNERAL MASSES WE BELIEVE IS MORE APPROPRIATE. BLACK SIGNIFIES DARKNESS AND EVIL AND EMPTINESS. WHITE SIGNIFIES GOODNESS, LIFE, LOVE AND HOLINESS. OUR GOD IS NOT THE GOD OF THE DEAD BUT OF THE LIVING [cf. Mt 22:32/ Mk 12:27/ Lk 20:38]. SO THE COLOR WHITE MANIFEST MORE THE FULLNESS OF LIFE PROMISED BY JESUS TO THOSE WHO BELIEVE IN HIM: Jn 11:25-27 [GNB] Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Those who believe in me will live, even though they die; 26 and those who live and believe in me will never die. Do you believe this?” 27 “Yes, Lord!” she answered. “I do believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, who was to come into the world.” ALSO, OUR BAPTISMAL ROBE IS WHITE. IT IS THE COLOR OF OUR CHRISTIAN HOPE IN CHRIST. AT THE END THERE ARE THREE THINGS THAT LAST: FAITH, HOPE AND LOVE [cf. 1 Cor 13:13]. WE RESPECT THE TLM PREFERENCE FOR BLACK IN FUNERAL MASSES BUT WE FIND IT VERY DARK AND TOO GLOOMY AND TOO DEPRESSING. INSTEAD, THE WHITE COLOR GIVES US HOPE IN THE LORD WHO IS THE GOD OF THE LIVING NOT OF THE DEAD. ALSO, FOR US CATHOLICS DEATH IS NOT THE END OF MAN. DEATH IS A PASSING FROM EARTHLY LIFE TO NEW LIFE, A SPIRITUAL LIFE THAT IS EVERLASTING. IT IS MORE APPROPRIATE FOR CHRISTIANS TO LOOK AT DEATH WITH THE LITURGICAL COLOR WHITE BECAUSE IT IS THE COLOR OF THE LORD’S RESURRECTION AND OF THE ASSUMPTION OF MARY WHICH WE HOPE TO SHARE FOREVER. WHY USE THE COLOR OF SATAN “DARKNESS” INSTEAD OF THE COLOR OF CHRIST “LIGHT” FOR OUR DEPARTED? WE PREFER THE USE OF WHITE IN FUNERAL MASSES TODAY RATHER THAN THE COLOR OF DARKNESS. IN LIFE OR IN DEATH WE BELONG TO CHRIST AND SO THE WHITE COLOR OF THE RISEN LORD AND OF OUR BAPTISMAL CLOTH IS MORE APPROPRIATE. IN THE PHILIPPINES AND IN ROME WE NOTICE THAT THE FUNERAL MASSES COLOR IS PURPLE OR VIOLET. WE ALSO LIKE IT BECAUSE PURPLE IS THE COLOR OF ROYALTY OF CHRIST AS SHOWN IN ADVENT. IT SIGNIFIES THAT THE ONE WHO DIED IS A CHILD OF GOD. IT IS ALSO THE COLOR OF GOD’S MERCY AND COMPASSION SUCH AS IN THE SACRAMENT OF CONFESSION AND DURING THE SEASON OF LENT. WE ALSO LOVE IT AND PREFER EITHER WHITE OR PURPLE FOR FUNERAL MASSES RATHER THAN BLACK. BUT ONCE AGAIN, WE RESPECT THE LITURGICAL COLOR OF TLM.
